What I enjoyed: Xishi undergoes raw and honest character development from hating all of “the enemy” to a more compassionate understanding that war isn’t always so black and white. While this is a retelling of a story from 400s BC, there are a lot of universal truths held within the pages. Xishi’s humanity adds interest to an already compelling story of espionage and military strategy. Her final scene with Fuchai was complicated and tender, and it made her more human that she didn’t carry on with such a stone heart for revenge. In the end, the way she becomes a perfect woman in the retellings of her life make sense, and I appreciate the perspective this novel brings to her story.
