What I enjoyed: so many really outrageous (but not surprising) revelations about single women throughout history. The evidence that it’s not melodrama in regency romance of spinster women being in actual peril and pariahs. It was reality, and a shitty one. All the way to the panic of declining (specifically white) population and the degradation of morals in society. Of course blamed on the single woman. I was filled with rage reading this as it still feels relevant; especially the survey of single women who say they don’t want to date men lacking in emotional intelligence. The pushback from men accusing women of not being feminine enough. It’s all so laughably familiar. The little snippets and bites of quotations from movies and books also help paint the color of cultural views of these women too. It felt like an immersive read.
