What I enjoyed: I’m happy that I was wrong! Well, mostly. The world-building is so much fun, and I love the method of dragon riding/bonding. It’s been done before in this way, but it’s still an interesting and engaging part of the story that I really enjoyed it. The military tactics and training are a fun twist on dragon school, and you shouldn’t get attached to any characters with how deadly it is out there. I bumped this up from three to four stars because we get to see Violet being clever and figuring things out rather than like other novels that tell but never show. The twist at the very end caught me by surprise, and got me excited to start reading book 2.
