What I enjoyed: Admittedly, I reluctantly decided to pull off the shelf and read next because I thought it would be incredibly boring, dry and slow moving. That was not the case. The moments in Vietnam are described in such lush and horrifying detail. It felt immersive. All around, Hannah creates this suspense of not knowing and anxiety. Ambushes and attacks looming as an ever present threat. But then the lighter moments, like water skiing on the river, balance out this complicated experience for Frankie. I thought that when she got back into regular society, it would be boring and slow moving, but actually that part of the story went faster than her time in Vietnam. There’s so much heartbreak and moments I just wanted to shout in rage for Frankie. So well done the emotional investment Hannah made me feel for the main character.
