What we enjoyed:
Female rage and witchcraft? Smashing the patriarchy through women supporting women? Heck yes. Also the cover art. This book had all the things to draw me in.
I liked that we got to see various aspects of femininity and what it means to be a woman. The simmering anger of not getting a full space to exist freely and the power of community in understanding.
The main villain was easy to hate and want the worst to come to him. His backstory was a little bit unoriginal, but he was unique enough in his powers that he remained interesting.
Lucky’s story also is one told countless times - a girl with dead parents discovers she’s a powerful witch, but this one swerves to avoid the, “not like other girls,” that type of narrative usually involves. How refreshing! This is the exact story of a great example that’s an antidote to that tired storytelling technique. That all girls, even other girls, are important and necessary. And there’s no other in it - just all girls
