What I enjoyed: For starters, this book dives right into some deep, dark themes: domestic violence, racism (albeit not very deeply), sexism, class, poverty, and abandonment. Really, the mystery of a death in the first couple of chapters takes a backseat to those other themes.
All of this darkness and pain is swirled up in the beautiful descriptions of a natural, untouched world and the creatures (and woman) who call it home. It's just wonderfully and meticulously done. This is a story with meat in it - with actual substance. You could read over and over again, picking up something new each time.
